A Letter from the Guidance Chairperson
Dear Students and Parents of the South Country Central School District,
Welcome back! I hope that you and your families had a happy and healthy summer. I am happy to announce that we have made some significant changes to our Guidance Department for the 2011-2012 school year. These changes were made with the goals of supporting academic achievement and improving college and career readiness among our students. We believe our students have phenomenal potential and the Guidance Department is here to support students in reaching their academic and career goals. In addition to adding three Guidance Counselors to our Guidance team district-wide, I wanted to take a moment to give you a glimpse of some of the initiatives the Guidance Department will be participating in this year to support our students.
In order to support academic achievement, the Guidance Department will be supporting various academic initiatives this year. Academic resources will be introduced to help our students excel. Castle Learning will be available to all students to support and reinforce what they are learning in the classroom. Castle Learning is an online tool which provides a full range of course content covering core areas of Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and English. We will be introducing Method Test Prep, an online, self-paced college test prep tutorial. Method Test Prep offers strategies to help students improve their SAT and ACT scores. SAT and ACT scores are important indicators which colleges use when deciding whether or not to accept a student for admission. With the costs of private SAT and ACT test prep courses increasing annually, high school students and their parents will be happy to know that the district will be providing this program at no cost. In addition, the high school will be offering a Credit Recovery Program. This program will be available to students who are at-risk academically in order to help them accumulate credits towards high school graduation. The Credit Recovery Program will be offered after school during the fall and spring semesters. Also, the Guidance Department has listed all PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP exam dates on the district calendar in order to encourage students to participate. Please be sure to check your calendar at home for important dates!
In order to promote college and career readiness, the Guidance Department will be hosting various informational nights throughout the school year. Mr. Rob Pertusati, Senior Associate Dean of Admissions at Stony Brook University will be at our Guidance Fall College Info Night for students grade 9 through 12 in the BHS auditorium on October 4th, 2011. We will host a Fall College Fair for students in grades 7 through 12 at the BHS Boys Gym on October 11th, 2011. Ms. Amy Thompson, Director of Financial Aid at St. Joseph's College will be at our Financial Aid Night in the BHS auditorium on December 6th, 2011. We will hold a Spring College Info Night for students in grades 9 through 12 in the BHS auditorium on March 1st, 2012. There will be a Spring College Fair for students in grades 9 through 12 in the BHS Boys Gym on March 13th, 2012. All of these dates will appear on the district calendar.
As part of promoting college and career readiness, we will be inviting high school students to meet with college representatives when they visit us at Bellport High School. We will be offering on site admissions days where students can meet with admissions representatives from local colleges and, if they meet all admissions criteria, may be accepted to that college on the spot. We will be introducing Naviance, an online college and career planning resource. Students can take skills and interest inventories to narrow down their choices. Naviance assists students in preparing themselves for the college admissions process. Through Naviance's Family Connection portal, parents may also monitor that students are taking the steps necessary towards college and career goals. Lastly, the Guidance Department will be promoting a School to Career Initiative which encourages seniors to take advantage of internship opportunities with local businesses.
Successful educational planning involves communication between students, parents, and the school. Please do not hesitate to contact us when we may be of assistance.
We are looking forward to an exciting school year!
Sincerely,
Patricia McCallum
Guidance Chairperson
